We had our 2nd annual Ironman competition this past weekend. Saturday is the rallyx. Saturday evening is the drag race. Sunday is the autox. You can use a different car for each event, but if you do, you don't stand a change of winning overall. I could actually run all three events in a different RX-7 but they told me they were gonna check my VIN wink.gif

I elected to do the event in the multi-color RX-7. It's my '81 with the stock 12A and carb. It does have a header and a RB presilencer and a RB Primaflow. I've installed an adjustable Miata coilover kit on the front struts with 400# springs. 170# springs with adjustable spring perches on the rear. The rear sway bar is gone as well. It's my regular rallyx car.

13 of the 14 rallyx competitors were running in the Ironman. I ended up 1st in class and suprisingly 3rd overall smile.gif behind a couple of scoobies - but in front of a couple of others. After the event I removed my rallyx tires, lowered my front coil overs, and mounted up my Azenis for the drive to the old airport.

We setup the drags at the old airport after local drag strip decided to bring a big competiton event in. Prior to actual event I made some runs with my 205/50-15 Azenis and my old 225/45-13 Hoosiers and according to the gTech, found that the Azenis were a bit quicker. We set up a 1/8 mile and made single car runs. As expected the RX-7 did not excel in this area and I finished 7th. I ran a 10.0xx according to the lights. My gTech said my best was 10.7xx. Maybe our staging box was a little deep wink.gif The scoobies took all the top spots here.

The autox was held at the old airport. The asphalt is very old. Basically we're running on the tops of the well worn rocks. I decided to run on my Azeni's 1st and then switch to my V710's. Earlier in the year my regular autox RX-7 ran 3rd overall on these same Azeni's. But I was down on power and the suspension is not as well setup either so I really wasn't expecting any results like that. The car didn't perform too badly considering that I've never had it aligned and that the lsd wasn't limiting very much. Prior to my runs I removed the adjustable rear spring perches so the car was low as I could get it at all 4 corners. After 3 runs my best time was my 1st run. My second run was a full second quicker but I knicked a cone somewhere. On my 3rd run I elected to push a bit deeper in an area that I thought I could go quicker. I ended up with a 1/2 spin instead. But no matter, after the lunch break we're gonna get 3 more runs and I'll be on my V710's.

So I'm eating my lunch under the pavilion when a rain storm blows thru. It's okay cause I can see daylight in the west and I'm in the 2nd run group. After the rain stops, I swap my tires and then answer the call for workers to report to their stations. As I'm walking out to the corner, the call comes thru that the event is over huh.gif Yea I see a bit of rain but it's gonna miss us. The event is over though. By the time we get everything put up and away it's raining sideways.

The event that I should have excelled in I performed poorly blink.gif I figure the V710's would have put me on a time that would have placed me right on pace to place 2nd in the autox portion of the Ironman competition. That would have netted me a total of 16 points. The exact same number that the Ironman winner (driving a scooby) collected ohmy.gif Such is life.....

This event is cool and I'm looking forward to next year. I think a bit of suspension work (like camber plates) will improve the autox performance and strapping on a warp drive will allow me to hang with scoobies at the drags tongue.gif

That sounds like a blast! Is there a web site for the event? It would be nice to get something like this going at each region with a national event at the end of the year event for the top guys.

Man, that does sound like a blast. My only concern with rallycross is how much I'll have to beat up on my car to be competetive. Congrats on the nice finishes...

No website. Just a thread on our local forum. A 10 page thread. If you want to read it....Ironman thread

I did 2/3 of an ironman this past weekend just for fun. Autox on Saturday and rallyx on Sunday. This car really needs some work to be faster in the autox. I for sure need to do something with my lsd. I'm also running CSP and the car is still a stock carbed 12a. It's fun but not fast finishing 3rd of 3. I guess you can't expect too much from a bunch of leftover parts;) After the autox I adjusted my coil overs all the way up, installed my rear spring height adjusters, and slapped on my rallyx tires before I put it back on the trailer. Maybe instead of calling it my multicolor car I can call it transformer. The rallyx was lightly attended and I was the only one in Prepared Rear. 100+ degrees may have had something to do with that.

Here are some pics from the last event:

Man, that looks like a blast. The only rallycross I ever attempted was last year, but the course was so rough everyone was blowing off their tires. I made two runs, and just couldn't stand the thought of what I was doing to my car.

The Nashville site is really rocky so I only go there occasionally. The site here in Huntsville and the one in Steele are free of rocks. Steele (the last event) was especially dusty.
